Biodiversity Indicators

This work was funded by DEFRA to produce a climate change indicator to measure "changes in the abundance of climate sensitive species".  The full report can be found is available on the DEFRA website (the ECN indicator is in Chapter 15).

Indicators have been developed for three separate taxa - butterflies, moths and ground beetles.  A single, composite indicator, based on a substantial core of common species, has been constructed - 21 butterfly, 115 moth and 15 ground predator species.  Each indicator is the logarithm of the geometric mean of the species counts plus one and can be thought of as the average log abundance of the set of species from which it was constructed.  The butterfly and moth indicators track variation in average summer temperature satisfactorily though the ground beetle indicator performs less well.

This graph shows the indicators for the English ECN sites (combined). It is also available as:

The chart will appear within this DIV. This text will be replaced by the chart.
